5 Essential Tools you Need to Slow Down the Aging Process.

4/3/2020

Skin and age are like a fine wine, with age comes confidence, robust character and complexity. With the many layers of flavor that create a beautiful wine, we need to address the many layers of aging that effect our skin. So, then, what should our skincare regime look like as we are aging?

Well, I have tried to narrow this down to the most essential:
Picture

#1: Wear Sunscreen Everyday

Accumulative sun exposure causes skin inflammation and damage such as hyperpigmentation spots, wrinkles and skin cancer. You want to select an excellent sunscreen that is right for your skin, given the level of sun exposure you are stepping into. Ask yourself these three questions:
  • How long are you going to be in the sun?
  • What type of activity will you be doing in the sun?
  • Is it for your face or body?

Why ask these questions?
  • Longer sun exposure = reapply every two hours
  • Water activities (swimming, surfing, scuba diving, parasailing) require a waterproof component. Outdoor active sports (running, volleyball, park play) requires a fragrance free and water resistant option.
  • You may need a less heavier sunscreen (weight/texture) on your face than your body because your face uses regular exfoliants and intensive night creams, causing it to be more sensitive compared to the less exfoliated skin on your body.
Please don't forget a major rule of thumb, reapply your sunscreen every two hours. Why? Our body will naturally absorb and change the chemical structure of any product on your skin. What do I mean by this? Well, just think, your product is either in a sealed or airless container to maintain the efficacy of the product. Now open the container and expose it to the environment for hours. If you left the container open, it would dry out at some point, oxidation would occurs and changes the chemical structure, not to mention exposure to bacteria, dust or insects that decide visit and smell the product, leaving a present on your product. You get the picture! Once you apply your products, you will need to reapply important products that serve a specific purpose. The more you are exposed to the sun in the form of hours, the more you will need to reapply the sunscreen to do its job and protect you. It’s like a bodyguard, but even bodyguards need to change out and have a minute to rest, eat and use the restroom. So, you switch out the bodyguard to keep the protection level at its freshest point.

Not all sunscreens are the same!
And some folks have allergies to certain ingredients. I suggest choosing a sunscreen that is an SPF 40 or higher and blocks both UVA and UVB. If your acne prone, check out my list of comedogenic (pore clogging) ingredients to avoid purchasing sunscreens with those options. If you wear sunscreen, the best anti-aging tip to you is that you MUST cleanse your skin before you go to sleep. You can clog your pores with a sunscreen due to an accumulative build up. This is after all, your protection from the one of our hottest stars in our galaxy.

#2: Cleanse your skin daily

I wish I could say that having a moisturizer, the eye cream would be the most important than the cleanser, but if you don’t wash your skin, the product benefits of any gel or cream are just caked on the top dead skin cells.  Having the right cleanser allows for your moisturizer to to it job. Cleanse daily with best cleanser matched according to your skin type.

Sensitive skin needs a gentle gel, oily or creamy cleanser. I always recommend for sensitive skin to obtain a sample size before purchasing and use the sample for 1 week to ensure that the cleanser is the correct fit.

Combination and dry skin types, often needs two types of cleansers, one for mild exfoliation to allow for better product penetration and the other to maintain the hydration, not stripping the skin.

Oily and congested skin types often need two types of cleansers, one to work on the cause of the congestion and the other to maintain hydration.

Keep in mind, you may need to change your cleansers based on environmental exposures. That includes weather, indoor heater and AC exposure, but not limited to occupation exposure such as high heats as a chef and high humidity from wearing facial masks in a hospital during a 4-6 hour surgery. Drier environments versus humid environments can significantly require a different cleaning system. You would want to restore oils in dryer environments and gentle enzymatic support to restore from the buildup in humid environments.

Considering a washcloth? I highly recommend consulting a licensed esthetician to identify if your skin needs a washcloth upon daily or evening cleanses. Not all skin types require the extra use of a cloth.

Just as your tastes in food and fashion changes with each decade, your skincare may need to change. If you’re ready for an remote consultation to find the best skin care options for your skin type, contact us here.

#3. Moisturize your skin
to maintain both water and oil hydration.

Let’s face it. Hormones change with age, and they affect our skin’s ability to produce our natural oils which effect the layers of skin. When I was a teenager, my acne was out of control, like an oil production factory moving at full speed. Then as each decade hit, the hormone levels shifted and my oil reserves started to look more like a Sahara Dessert. As if fighting gravity isn't a challenging enough, now we need to restore good hydration.

So, I am assuming that everyone is cleansing their skin to remove the environmental debris, oil and sweat. The next step to slowing down the aging process is to find the perfect moisturizer that helps you lock in the hydration for a more dewier appearance. You want all the delicious qualities in a appropriate moisturizer such as:
  • Keeping your skin hydrated
  • One that helps attract water to your skin
  • And it absorbs well, not sit on the skin to block your pores

Please don’t confuse this moisturizer with my #5 most essential to anti-aging,  using a night cream. Active night creams are not the same as having a good moisturizer. Everyone needs one quality and reliable moisturizer to go to when you just want to feel hydrated and plump. The night creams are active creams to regenerate the skin with purpose. They are the creams that seek out your largest frustrations and attack them on site (hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, inflammation, skin build up and many more). You can have a moisturizer that contains the extra benefits of preventing aging, but using the same thing over and over causes the skin to become tiresome and unresponsive.

A word of caution, finding the appropriate moisturizer may require not buying into all of the fancy jargon that describes luxury moisturizers. If you are a novice to skin care, "virgin" ingredient exposure is real thing. That means, if you have not acclimated your skin to a variety of active ingredients over time,  your skin may be more reactive toward highly active ingredients. If you have invested in your skin since you were a teen trying every new anti-aging and anti-wrinkle cream on the market, then, you most likely can tolerate a moisturizer with more active ingredients.

#4: Eye Cream, hide the first visible sign of aging.

The skin around your eyes is different compared to your overall facial skin. The skin is thinner with tiny layered muscles and less oil glands than your forehead and cheek area. You do need an little extra cream or gel to help the skin stay hydrated and reduce signs of puffiness, fine lines, and discoloration.

When looking for an eye cream, you want to look for these things:
  • Fragrance free
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Emollient to maintain the hydration

Make a note, majority of eye creams do not have built in sunscreen, so, don’t forget to place your sunscreen over your eye area for added protection from the sun. Do not place the sunscreen in your eye and if your sunscreen has fragrance, it may irritate your eye from the fragrance fumes. I often look for mineral powders with built in SPF to place over my eye area. Option two, find a large brimmed hat and sunglasses to cover your orbital bone area as well as entire face to protect against potential sun damage.

There are no miracle eye creams. There are ingredients that support the eye’s intricate muscles, maintain hydration and attempt to support lymphatic drainage. When you find that great eye cream, try storing it inside the refrigerator. Applying the cool cream or gel to the eyes twice daily can help reduce inflammation and puffiness. Most of what you see around the eyes are results of stress, heredity, sun exposure and some are related to side effects if you smoked, took long term medications, alcohol consumption and had poor dietary habits. That is a long list of potential causes, which means, the reversal and prevention of eye care, requires good quality eye supports.

#5: An Active Night Cream

I gave away the #5 secret if you read #3, but I didn't tell you all the reasons why I think this is the number 5 most essential skin care product for anti-aging. Regular daily moisturizers are lighter, support makeup and maintain the dewy look. Night creams are the ones that contain higher levels of active ingredients and require the skin to avoid UV sun exposure. Most anti-aging night creams contain exfoliation properties that increase cell turnover, which means that they diminish pore size, age spots and fine lines. Other night creams contain peptides, filler mimicking effects, and deep nourishing hydration.

What is the best night cream for you? Ask yourself what you want to work on. Oh, yea! I know! You want to work on it all at one time:
  • Skin texture
  • Hydration
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Plumping to the collagen
  • Reduce pigmentation and even skin tone
  • The list can go on forever...

Allow your skin to get acclimated to the active ingredients specific to your most frustrating concern, then slowly start integrating other ingredients to target the other issues. Sometimes, with night creams, you need to use them every other night or over two nights apart. They are highly active for a reason, but you can alternate them to allow your skin to experience a variety of anti-aging messages and not overload your skin. Best example, if you received several texts at the same time from different people, you can't read and respond at the same time, unless you had an assistant. Pretend you don't have an assistant. You need to read, respond and send one message at a time. It's overload to try to answer all 5 messages at the same time if they are on different threads. Night creams act just like that. Give your skin one essential message at a time, once acclimated, then you can layer other messages.
