Lifestyle Choices Affecting Acne

Swimmers

Swimming pool disinfectants contain iodides and chlorine which can remain in the water, causing skin problems for frequent swimmers. Exposure to chlorine and other chemicals found in pool water does more than leave you smelling like a pool. Chlorine strips away the natural oils in your skin and can cause damage including increased dryness, itchiness, acne breakouts and even increased sun damage because your skin isn’t as healthy. Proper skin care for swimmers is crucial to preventing these symptoms. Try these tips to help:

  1. Shower before swimming
  2. Use waterproof sunscreen
  3. Drink plenty of water
  4. Wear a swim cap
  5. Shower after swimming
  6. Use a chlorine-neutralizing soap
  7. Moisturize your skin
  8. Properly wash your swimwear after your swim, as soon as possible to prevent the chemicals from getting trapped in the fabric.

Often in our studio, we advise applying a thin layer of Vaseline before you get in the pool, it helps to avoid many of the complications from the chlorine and iodines.
